On 11 August 2020, the club was relegated to the National League following the EFL's appeal. The suspended four-point deduction was activated, dropping Macclesfield to the bottom of the table, and reprieving Stevenage. The following day, manager Mark Kennedy and his assistant resigned.
Why was Macclesfield expelled?
Macclesfield Town have been expelled from the National League. The club were wound up by the High Court in September over unpaid debts totalling more than £500,000. Now, a resolution to expel has been passed, taking effect from 12 October.
What will happen to Macclesfield Town?
Macclesfield Town will relaunch as Macclesfield FC after local businessman Robert Smethurst acquired the assets of the club. Robbie Savage will serve as the head of football at the rebuilt club at Moss Rose.
