Prevention. Keep a library dry and clean to discourage infestations. Soak a piece of cloth in camphor, naphthalene, turpentine or an infusion of tobacco and place it behind the books to help keep bookworms away. Reapply when you can no longer smell it.

Where do bookworms come from?

Often, the larvae of various types of insects including beetles, moths and cockroaches, which may bore or chew through books seeking food, are responsible. Some such larvae exhibit a superficial resemblance to worms and are the likely inspiration for the term, though they are not true worms.

How do you prevent books from insects?

You can sprinkle pepper or insect powder near your books. Not to be mistaken, however, DO NOT SPRINKLE ANYTHING ON THE BOOKS. Just like the cotton balls, you put it near the books, and the smell deters the pests from munching on your old books.
