Fungal infection is the most common cause of angular cheilitis. It's usually caused by a type of yeast called Candida-- the same fungus that causes diaper rash in babies. Certain bacteria strains also can cause it. A deficiency in riboflavin (vitamin B2) may also lead to angular cheilitis.
How does angular cheilitis go away?
In many cases, no treatment is needed and angular cheilitis resolves by itself. Depending on the specific cause, the following treatments may be useful: Lip balm or thick emollient ointment, applied frequently. Topical antiseptics.
Is angular cheilitis permanent?
Angular cheilitis (AC) is inflammation of one or both corners of the mouth. Often the corners are red with skin breakdown and crusting. It can also be itchy or painful. The condition can last for days to years.
