The Welsh devolution referendum of 1997 was a pre-legislative referendum held in Wales on 18 September 1997 over whether there was support for the creation of a National Assembly for Wales, and therefore a degree of self-government.
When did devolution happen in Wales?
In 1997 50.3% of Wales voted for the creation of a devolved National Assembly for Wales, brought about by the Government of Wales Act 1998. Following the Government of Wales Act 2006, the assembly gained the ability to pass primary legislation.
When did Scotland and Wales become devolved?
The current form of devolution in the UK goes back to the late 1990s. In 1997 voters chose to create a Scottish Parliament and a National Assembly for Wales. In Northern Ireland devolution was a key element of the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement and was supported in a referendum in 1998.
