Many are semi-evergreen and never truly go dormant. Cool season grasses mature quickly and typically begin "flowering" in June, unlike warm season grasses that lay dormant (evidenced by ugly brown, straw-like blades) until late spring and then begin flowering mid to late summer.
How often does grass flower?
The period of time when seed heads form will differ for each grass, but, in general, it will last for several weeks to a month. After that, the grass will resume growing leaves, and your mowing will look neater.
What does it mean when grass is flowering?
The reason your grass flowers is pretty simple. Your lawn is just like so many other plants in your landscape. In order to reproduce, it forms a flower, and then seed. In a naturally occurring situation, this seed eventually drops into the soil and grows into more grass.
