What Is Tailplane Icing?

The term "Ice Contaminated Tailplane Stall", or ICTS, refers to those events that involve flow separation from the horizontal stabilizer, due to ice accretion, which leads to an aerodynamic stall of the tailplane and results in a nose-down pitch upset of the aircraft.

How do you heal a tailplane icing?

Pull yoke back (opposite to action for a wing stall recovery). This reduces angle of attack of the tailplane and moves it away from the critical angle. Retract flaps. Maintain or reduce thrust.

What do you do in a tailplane stall?

Tailplane Stall Recovery:

-Pull back on the yoke. -Reduce Flaps. -Reduce Power: This is aircraft specific based on engine location in relation to CG and how power changes angle of attack. (Engines mounted above the CG will create a stronger pitching down moment as power increases)
