Are Allergens Enzymatically Active?

Indoor allergens have diverse biologic functions and may be enzymes, lipid-binding proteins, ligand-binding proteins, structural or regulatory proteins. The biologic function of allergens may enhance IgE responses and play a direct role in causing allergic inflammation.

Are allergens unstable?

It appears that relative stability in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) sometimes correlates with allergenic activity. However, this is not universally true, and it is known that there are protein allergens, such as some of those associated with oral allergy syndrome, that are unstable.

Are allergens stable or unstable?

Allergen stability can be defined as the ability of proteins to preserve their native, three-dimensional pattern after chemical, physical or protease treatment over time (Breiteneder and Mills, 2005; Deller et al., 2016). Fig. 1. Allergen uptake via skin and mucosal surfaces.
