Urbanization is the process by which rural communities grow to form cities, or urban centers, and, by extension, the growth and expansion of those cities. Urbanization began in ancient Mesopotamia in the Uruk Period (4300-3100 BCE) for reasons scholars have not yet agreed on.
When did the Urbanisation start?
In comparison, the percentage of the European population living in cities was 8–13% in 1800. Urbanization of the human population accelerated rapidly beginning in the middle of the eighteenth century.
When and where did Urbanisation first began?
Prior to 1950 the majority of urbanisation occurred in MEDCs (more economically developed countries). Rapid urbanisation took place during the period of industrialisation that took place in Europe and North America in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
