Do Viruses Have Thymine?

The recent NCBI virus list shows, there are 2323 complete viral genome sequence available for scientific community. The distribution of thymine in some of these viral genomes is carried out. Unlike normal coding protein coding RNA sequence, the viral RNAs shows a different distribution.

Do viruses have uracil or thymine?

Uracils in cellular or viral DNA may derive from different sources. The common RNA base uracil (U) that is substituted by thymine (T) in DNA is able to naturally pair with adenine (A) but can also mispair with guanine (G).

Is there ever DNA in a virus?

A virus is a small collection of genetic code, either DNA or RNA, surrounded by a protein coat. A virus cannot replicate alone. Viruses must infect cells and use components of the host cell to make copies of themselves. Often, they kill the host cell in the process, and cause damage to the host organism.
