Rabies is caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system (CNS), in particular the brain. Domestic dogs, cats, and rabbits — and wild animals such as skunks, raccoons, and bats — are able to transfer the virus to humans via bites and scratches.
Does rabies make humans aggressive?
Rabies vectors frequently show behavioral changes. Aggressive behavior with biting is important for transmission of the virus to new hosts at a time when virus is secreted in the saliva. Aggression is associated with low serotonergic activity in the brain.
Are rabid humans dangerous?
Rabies is a serious but fairly rare disease. It is a virus transmitted to humans through an infected animal's saliva. Rabies is almost always fatal if left untreated.
