Should Gerbils Live Together?

Should Gerbils Live Together?

Gerbils are social animals and need the constant company of their own kind. The only exception to this is the Fat-tailed gerbil, as females of this species can be kept alone, and will often fight with other females. Otherwise, it is always advisable to get a pair of gerbils, either two males or two females.

How many gerbils should be kept together?

Limit yourself to between 2 and 4 gerbils.

While you can get more, groups of between 2 and 4 gerbils are the most manageable. If you keep more than this, there might be a lot of competition and conflict in your cage. If you don't have much experience with gerbils, keep as few as possible.

Should gerbils be housed together?

Because of the social nature of gerbils, the ASPCA recommends housing a minimum of two of them together. To stop conflict and aggression, however, the younger the gerbils are brought together, the better.
