The only way to grow lawn grass from clippings is to allow the grass to grow so long it produces seed. Then, when the seed remains in the clippings and conditions are right, it may germinate. Allowing grass to become so overgrown that it produces seeds ensures that it has an unkempt appearance.
Does cut grass reseed itself?
Regularly mowed lawns typically do not seed themselves because grass cannot produce seed unless it develops flowers. However, many species of grass are capable of spreading out vegetatively from side shoots that grow above or below the soil.
Can you use grass clippings as seed?
Grass clippings can be an excellent alternative to straw or mulch that combines the best of both worlds, but you have to be careful to spread them evenly and not too thick. Bag your grass clippings prior to spreading seed, and let them dry. Then spread them lightly on the lawn along with your grass seed.
