What Does Nose Packing Mean?

What Does Nose Packing Mean?

Nasal packing is the placement of an intranasal device that applies constant local pressure to the nasal septum. Nasal packing works by (1) direct pressure; (2) consequent reduction of mucosal irritation, which decreases bleeding; and (3) clot formation surrounding the foreign body, which enhances pressure.

What happens when nasal packing comes?

The packing also provides pressure inside the nose. This may lower blood flow to areas of the nose and result in injury. Septal perforations (hole in the partition dividing the right and left nasal cavity) and scarring in the nasal cavity can form after the packing is removed.

When is nasal packing used?

Nasal packing is used to control bleeding in epistaxis and after endonasal surgery, for internal stabilization, and to prevent synechiae or restenosis, particularly after surgery.
