Named in 1827 by Adolph Theodor Kupffer after its type locality in the Ilmen Mountains, Russia.
Who discovered ilmenite?
It was not until four years later that German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth returned to an investigation of ilmenite and isolated the new element. He suggested the name of titanium for the element in honor of the Titans, mythical giants who ruled the Earth until they were overthrown by the Greek gods.
Where is ilmenite found in the world?
Ilmenite is mined in Australia, Brazil, Russia, Canada, Sri Lanka, Norway, China, South Africa, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Sierra Leone and the United States. Ilmenite is not the only source of titanium.
