The indications to perform the ice-water caloric test were: 1) unilateral canal weakness >90%; 2) a maximum slow phase velocity of nystagmus after hot (44 degrees C) and cold (30 degrees C) caloric stimulation in either ear of <9 degrees s(-1); or 3) in both ears <15 degrees s(-1).
How do you use ice water for calories?
A small amount of cold water or air is gently delivered into one of your ears. Your eyes should show an involuntary movement called nystagmus. Then they should turn away from that ear and slowly back. If water is used, it is allowed to drain out of the ear canal.
When do you use caloric tests?
Caloric stimulation is a test used to check for damage to your acoustic nerve, which could be caused by various medical disorders and diseases, or by certain medications. Abnormal results may point to acoustic nerve damage, damage to the ear's balance sensors, or brain damage.
