You must surrender apportioned plates directly to the DMV International Registration Bureau (IRB) in Albany, not to a local DMV office. Complete form IRP-6 (Schedule A&C) indicating that you want to delete the vehicle(s) from your account. You can download the IRP-6 from the Business Use Forms page at the DMV Web site.
Can I return plates to DMV by mail?
You may mail the plates, decal, and a signed letter requesting cancelation. You may wish to send the plates via certified mail with return signature required. Be sure to include your correct return address and daytime telephone number in case we need to contact you.
Can I return one plate to DMV?
You must surrender the vehicle registration to the DMV. If two vehicle plates are lost, stolen or destroyed (or one plate if the vehicle was issued only one plate, e.g. motorcycles), you need to notify the police, and ask the police to complete a police report.
