The UAN is a unique number assigned to every EPFO member who contributes to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) scheme. The UAN remains the same even when employees change organizations. When the UAN gets generated, the EPFO member has to activate the UAN by logging in into the EPFO member portal.

Why is UAN activation required?

To check your provident fund (PF) balance, you need to activate your UAN first. Once you activate UAN, you will be able to check your PF balance online. The concept behind UAN is to have one account number for one subscriber, irrespective of the number of employers that the subscriber changes.

What happens if UAN is not activated?

If you don't activate your UAN number then you need to depend on your employer or PF office for every small PF related works. Every employee who is contributing to EPF will have a UAN number and PF account number. If you don't know your UAN number then you can find it with your PF‌ account number at UAN member portal.
