What are the symptoms of gnathostomiasis?
When someone eats the parasite, it moves through the wall of the stomach or intestine and liver. During this early phase, many people have no symptoms or they may experience fever, excess tiredness, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. This phase may last for 2 or 3 weeks.
How is gnathostomiasis treated?
Current therapy of gnathostomiasis includes oral albendazole, 400mg bid for 21 days, with an efficacy over 90%. The alternative regimen is a single dose of ivermectin, 0.2mg/kg, that may be repeated after seven days. Some patients may experience recurrence of the disease after an apparently successful initial therapy.
