Fetterbush is a native evergreen shrub in the heath family that is found in swampy areas, bogs and wet woods from VA to FL and west to LA. It grows 3-6 feet tall and wide and has a dense arching often sprawling form that impedes (fetters) foot traffic of animals and humans making it a good hedge.
Is fetterbush an evergreen?
Shinyleaf or fetterbush is a 3-5 ft. high suckering, open, arching evergreen with urn-shaped, pinkish-white flowers occuring in axillary racemes. The attractive foliage is glossy-green and leathery.
How to grow fetterbush?
Fetterbush grows best in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 7b through 9. Plant the shrubs in partial shade in moist soil. Fetterbush won't tolerate standing water, so be sure to plant it in well-draining soil. On the other hand, care of fetterbush requires regular and generous irrigation.
