Bulls use wallows to advertise before and during the rut. Wallowing activity decreases as the rut winds down for the fall. But during the weeks leading up to the rut and during the breeding bedlam you may find a bull at a wallow anytime, 24/7.
How can you tell an elk wallow?
A trail camera on a wallow can tell you a lot about the frequency, timing and how many bulls may be using it. Another great way to find a wallow is simply to follow a herd. A bugling bull pushing cows will often make an early morning or evening stop at a wallow to freshen up.
Where do elk wallow?
Wallows can be found in the timber as well as out in the open. Any spot/hole that'll hold a little water could potentially be used by a bull for a wallow. Look for areas along creeks, seeps, or other areas where water and mud can be found in common elk hangouts.
