The biggest user of CableCard technology is TiVo which has a CableCard in every DVR recorder it sells. The FCC order doesn’t force cable companies to continue to support CableCard technology, but they likely will. It’s more likely that CableCard devices will just become technically obsolete over time.
What happened to CableCARD?
In September 2020, the FCC eliminated CableCARD support and reporting requirements by cable operators, recognizing that cable industry deployment and use of CableCARDs have been “disappointing”, and noting that competition has provided other options for consumer flexibility via streaming media over the Internet.
How does a TiVo work?
TiVo works by storing shows as digital information: a series of 1s and 0s retained the same way a computer stores its information. The show is saved on a hard drive until it is ready to be viewed, and can be played back anytime the user likes.
Will TiVo bolt work without CableCARD?
If you do not insert a CableCARD decoder into your TiVo device, it will not be able to receive digital cable TV. It will receive broadband content, as long your UES/DVR is connected to the Internet through your home network.
Does TiVo work with Spectrum?
Yes. TiVo is compatible with digital cable systems and Verizon FiOS. The cable card is what allows TiVo to access Spectrum TV and Spectrum is required by the FCC to support cable cards.
