Can you just pick up a possum?
If the opossum is very small (still thermoregulating) you can pick it up by the tail or body, always taking care to make your final approach from the rear. Going right over their head is threatening and will usually gain a harmless snap up at you at that age.
Should possums be out during the day?
Daylight activity isn’t natural for possums, in part because they have such poor eyesight that it’s difficult for these animals to see well in broad daylight. For this reason, a possum that’s out during the day may be more likely to “play dead” if it is startled or feels threatened.
Do possums eat cats?
No, possums do not eat cats. They may occasionally attack a cat if they feel their young are threatened, if they are cornered (though they are more likely to play dead in these situations) or if they are competing for food.
Why do baby possums hang on their mom?
If the mother is disturbed and moves during the babies’ pouch-searching process, the babies may well lose their way, fall off, and perish. Once inside the pouch, the babies find a nipple, attach themselves to it very securely, and during the next two months ride in the mother’s pouch continuing their development.
