Can I installing resilient channel over existing drywall?
It should be noted that adding resilient channels to an existing wall (over the existing gypsum) will not increase STC values. There is not enough space between the old and new gypsum for RC to work effectively. A variety of fiberboard-based products have been used to achieve better STC values.
How can I get STC rating of 50?
Add Soundproofing Membranes: If you need to achieve an STC of 50 or higher, consider using a soundproofing membrane. These products offer decoupling by separating the drywall from studs, and also significant mass increases.
