Palatine Process

Palatine Process

The palatine process of the maxilla bone and the horizontal plate of the palatine bone provide the components of the nasal cavity floor. The os palatinum is also an attachment point for facial muscles.

What does the Palatine process articulate with?

The human palatine articulates with six bones: the sphenoid, ethmoid, maxilla, inferior nasal concha, vomer and opposite palatine. There are two important foramina in the palatine bones that transmit nerves and blood vessels to this region: the greater and lesser palatine.

Is the Palatine process the hard palate?

The hard palate is comprised of two facial bones: the palatine process of the maxilla and the paired palatine bones. The hard palate contains several landmarks, including the incisive foramen and the greater and lesser palatine foramina.

What is the palatine anatomy?

The Adult Palatine. The palatine bones contribute to the posterior part of the roof of the mouth and floor and lateral walls of the nose, the medial wall of the maxillary sinuses and the orbital floors. Each bone (Fig. 5-66) consists of horizontal and perpendicular plates (laminae) set at right angles to each other.

What is palatine suture?

Medical Definition of palatine suture

: either of two sutures in the hard palate: a : a transverse suture lying between the horizontal plates of the palatine bones and the maxillae. b : a median suture lying between the maxillae in front and continued posteriorly between the palatine bones.

Where is the ethmoid?

The ethmoid bone is an unpaired cranial bone that is a significant component of the upper nasal cavity and the nasal septum. The ethmoid bone also constitutes the medial orbit wall.

What does the palatine bone separate?

The palatine bones are paired L-shaped bones joined at the midline. They form the hard palate with the maxillary bones. They also form part of the floor of the nasal cavity (the hard palate separates the oral cavity from the nasal cavity).

What is pyramidal process?

The pyramidal process or eminence of the petrous temporal bone is a small hollow anterior osseous protrusion from the posterior wall of the mesotympanum that separates the sinus tympani medially from the facial recess laterally.

What is pyramidal process of palatine bone?

The pyramidal process of the palatine bone projects backward and lateralward from the junction of the horizontal and vertical parts, and is received into the angular interval between the lower extremities of the pterygoid plates.

What is palatine Rugae?

The palatine rugae are ridges situated in the anterior part of the palatal mucosa on each side of the medial palatal raphae and behind the incisive papilla (IP). At birth, the palatine rugae are well-formed, and the pattern of orientation typical for the person is present.

What is Palatine Aponeurosis?

The palatine aponeurosis is a thin, fibrous lamella comprising the extended tendons of the tensor veli palatini muscles, attached to the posterior border and inferior surface of the palatine bone.

When the palatine processes of the maxillary bones do not fuse properly resulting in an opening between the oral and nasal cavities The condition is known as?

During the first 6 to 10 weeks of pregnancy, the bones and skin of a baby’s upper jaw, nose, and mouth normally come together (fuse) to form the roof of the mouth and the upper lip. A cleft palate happens when parts of the roof of the mouth do not fuse together completely.

What is palatine in biology?

Making up a portion of the nasal cavity and palate, the palatine bone is a paired, L-shaped facial bone. It forms a part of the underside of the skull, and lies between the maxilla bone (the fixed, upper bone of the jaw) and the sphenoid bone (whose wings help form the base of the eye sockets and base of the skull).

What is the difference between the Palatine process and the palatine bone?

In human anatomy of the mouth, the palatine process of maxilla (palatal process), is a thick, horizontal process of the maxilla. It forms the anterior three quarters of the hard palate, the horizontal plate of the palatine bone making up the rest.

What are the two palatine bones?

The two palatine bones (L., palatum “palate”) form portions of the hard palate, lateral walls of the nasal cavity, and floors of the orbits.

What is lateral palatine processes?

a medially directed outgrowth of the embryonic maxilla; when fused with its opposite number it forms the secondary palate. Synonym(s): lateral palatal shelf, palatal shelves.

What is the greater palatine foramen?

The greater palatine foramen (or canal) perforates the rear corner of the hard palate and is formed as the alveolar process of the maxilla meets the horizontal plate of the palatine. This canal transmits the greater palatine vessels and nerve.

What is the Squamosal suture?

The squamosal suture is one of the lateral minor skull sutures, separating the parietal and squamous temporal bones. While the phenotypic appearances and sequelae of synostosis of the major cranial vault sutures are well documented, little is reported concerning synostosis of the squamosal suture (SQS).
