How painful is a Matrixectomy?

This in office procedure is painless once the toe is anesthetized. It takes less than a few minutes to complete the procedure. Once the toe is numbed up, the portion or portions of the nail that are causing the pain are removed using special sterilized instruments designed specifically for this procedure.

Is Matrixectomy a surgery?

Partial Nail Removal (Matrixectomy) is used to remove a portion of an ingrown toenail which causes pain or discomfort with a patient. The procedure also helps to prevent the ingrown toenail from returning. Using local anesthetic, Matrixectomy is a simple operation that only requires a few minutes to perform.

How long does it take to heal from a Matrixectomy?

A retrospective study showed a healing time from 2 to 4 weeks [25], with similar results to a prospective research that reported the return to normal activity after partial chemical matricectomy in 3.89 weeks [26].

What is Phenolisation?

Accordingly, in some cases as determined by a doctor, the nail matrix is coated with a chemical (usually phenol) so none of the nail will ever grow back. This is known as a permanent or full nail avulsion, or full matrixectomy, phenolisation, or full phenol avulsion.

Is Matrixectomy permanent?

A matrixectomy is the medical term that means removing the growth area of the nail that is leading to the curved ingrown toenail. This allows for a permanent solution to prevent your ingrown toenail from returning.

What happens after Matrixectomy?

Complete Permanent Nail Removal (Matrixectomy)

Toe is bandaged in much the same manner as in a partial procedure, but pain and healing tend to last several weeks longer. After healing is complete the site of nail removal gets covered with healthy skin that from a distance can resemble a normal nail.

What chemical is used in a Matrixectomy?

Phenol is the most commonly used agent for chemical matricectomy, but other agents, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA), have shown high success rates for the cauterization of the lateral matrix horn (1).

Can I walk after toenail removal?

If that happens, a repeat procedure is usually done. Patients that are involved in walking, running, or athletic activity can typically return to activity within 2-3 days for removal of infected toenail and 5-7 days for a permanent nail procedure with chemical application.

What is phenol Matrixectomy?

The fresh phenol is applied with pressure within the nail groove, matrix, and roof of the matrix. The use of an alcohol flush serves as a mechanical irrigation rather than a neutralizing agent. The incorporation of Adaptic serves as a drain which is removed on postoperative day 1 along with the accumulated coagulum.

How do you destroy the nail matrix?

Electrocautery ablation is used to destroy the nail-forming matrix beneath the area where the nail plate has been removed. The flat matricectomy electrode is coated on one side to avoid damage to the overlying proximal nail fold.

Can toenails be permanently removed?

Permanent Toenail Removal

In this procedure, your podiatrist destroys the nail matrix to prevent a new toenail from growing. The matrix is the part of the nail bed that produces keratin to make nails. This may be necessary in cases of severe, long-lasting infection or the development of scar tissue on the nail bed.

Will toenail grow back after Matrixectomy?

When performed with a chemical matrixectomy, the nail will not regrow and you will no longer suffer from the problems your toenail was causing. When performed without, the nail will regrow from scratch, a process that takes approximately 12 months.

How much pain is normal after toenail removal?

This will prevent the nail from becoming ingrown in the future without significantly altering the appearance of the nail. The procedure takes less than 5 minutes once the toe is numb. Typical recoveries have limited to no discomfort and usually alleviate ingrown nail discomfort within 24 hours.

How do I permanently get rid of an ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail can be permanently corrected with a procedure called a chemical matrixectomy. This procedure involves removing either a portion of the nail that is ingrown or the entire toenail in certain cases. To perform this procedure, we will first numb the toe with a local anesthetic.

What is wedge resection of toenail?

In recurrent or intractable cases a ‘wedge resection’ may be recommended. This is a procedure whereby a sliver of the nail margin is removed (including the nail ‘bed’). This will prevent reoccurrence. This procedure is performed under ‘ring-block’ anaesthesia – the entire toe is anaesthetised.

How do you ablate a nail bed?

After exsanguination, place a tourniquet on the middle of the thigh. Alternatively, use a soft rubber bandage to exsanguinate the foot, then wrap the leg tightly just above the ankle (see Fig 1-1). The use of a rubber tourniquet around the base of the toe is indicated when a digital ring block is used for anesthesia.

Can ingrown toenail cure without surgery?

Most of the time, an ingrown toenail heals without surgery. In severe cases, your healthcare provider may need to remove part of the nail surgically. The procedure is called a nail avulsion. Surgery keeps the edge of the nail from growing inward and cutting into the skin.
