Should there be a gap between Hardie board siding?
Run the siding to the HardieTrim® board leaving a 1/8 in. gap between the siding and trim. The bottom of the siding should be kept even with the bottom of the trim, or if desired, the trim may extend below the bottom of the siding. But the siding should never hang below the trim.
What goes behind Hardieboard?
Joint flashing: James Hardie recommends that a slip sheet (joint flashing) is installed behind each butt joint in the siding. This is a 6” wide piece of weather resistive material to make sure that no water gets through.

How do you stagger Hardie siding?
It’s best to stagger the joints in each successive course to avoid noticeable patterns. Butt joints in adjacent courses should be spaced apart by at least two stud bays for 16-inch, o.c. framing or one bay for 24-inch, o.c. framing.
Should you caulk fiber cement siding?
Many professionals, like those at James Hardie, also agree that you should not use caulk on fiber cement siding unless there is no metal flashing underneath. Flashing acts as a waterproofing layer for this type of siding, and caulking will prevent the flashing from doing its job.
Does Hardie board and batten need to be caulked?
Make sure that the flashing is sloped away from the wall and does not rest flat on the top edge of the panel. Install the second level or gable panels leaving a 1/4 in. minimum gap between the bottom of the panel and the Z flashing. This gap should never be caulked.

Should Hardie board be primed?
