Displaced Threshold

Displaced Threshold

If you’re landing on a runway with a displaced threshold, you can’t land before the marked threshold. This places a lot of otherwise usable runway behind you. But, you can taxi onto the runway using the pavement before the displaced threshold and you can also use it to start the takeoff roll.

How is a displaced threshold identified?

If the runway displacement is permanent it is marked in two ways: White arrows in the centre of the runway pointing towards the displaced threshold. A white “Runway Threshold Bar” at the displaced threshold extending the width of the runway.

What operations are permitted on a displaced threshold?

A displaced threshold is available for taxing, landing rollout, and takeoff, but not landing.

Can I take off from a displaced threshold?

The portion of runway behind a displaced threshold is available for takeoffs in either direction and landings from the opposite direction.

Does runway length include displaced threshold?

When a runway has a displaced threshold, the landing distance available (LDA) is shorter than the runway length. The threshold to Runway 30 at Winona Municipal-Max Conrad Field (KONA) is displaced by 480 feet, meaning that aircraft are not supposed to land before that point on the runway.

What is the purpose of the displaced threshold?

Description. A displaced threshold is a threshold located at a point on the runway other than the designated beginning of the runway. Displacement of a threshold reduces the length of runway available for landings in this direction only.

What do the white lines on a runway mean?

The Runway Aiming Point is the broad white stripe located on each side of the runway centerline that marking provides a visual aiming point for landing aircraft.

Which runway marking indicates a displaced threshold?

A displaced threshold on an instrument runway is indicated by arrows in the middle of the runway leading to the displaced threshold mark. The runway edge lights to the displaced threshold appear red to an airplane on approach, and to an airplane taxiing to the displaced threshold from the absolute end of the runway.

What is the aiming point on a runway?

Runway Aim Point Markings

The aiming point marking serves as a visual aiming point for a landing aircraft. These two rectangular markings consist of a broad white stripe located on each side of the runway centerline and approximately 1,000 feet from the landing threshold, as shown in [the figure].

Can you land on a taxiway?

As long as there aren’t any people or things to hit, it’s certainly much safer to land into the wind on a taxiway than to try landing in a crosswind so strong you are concerned about making it safely. Importantly, the FAR’s contain no prohibition against taxiway landings.

What is the length of the displaced threshold for runway 22 at Toledo TDZ?

What is the length of the displaced threshold for runway 22 at Toledo (TDZ)? 380 feet.

Can a stopway be used for takeoff?

The stopway is an area beyond the runway which can be used for deceleration in the event of a rejected takeoff. It must be: At least as wide as the runway. Centered upon the runway extended centerline.
