Is GoBoard the same as cement board?

GoBoard® is the ultra-lightweight, waterproof tile backer board from Johns Manville. It’s engineered for durability, yet is up to 80% lighter than cement boards. GoBoard is easy to handle and can be cut right where it’s installed with a basic utility knife, without crumbling or disintegrating.

Is GoBoard waterproof?

GoBoard itself is waterproof. To ensure a waterproof tile assembly, all fastener locations and joints (between boards, at corners and for other changes of plane) must be sealed completely with GoBoard® Sealant or a waterproof sealant (see for approved alternative sealants).

Do I need to seal GoBoard?

Sealant must extend onto GoBoard surface at least 1″ beyond joint on either sides. The slightest pin hole may result in a leak, so careful attention is required when sealing joints.
