Girls usually begin puberty between the ages of 8 and 13 years old. The earliest sign of puberty in most girls is the development of breast “buds,” nickel-sized bumps under the nipple. It is not unusual for breast growth to start on one side before the other.

How do you know if you have breast buds?

Symptoms
A small disc-shaped lump felt under the areola. They sometimes start just on one side. Within 2 or 3 months, a breast bud will also appear on the other side.Breast buds normally can be somewhat tender.They normally become more tender if they are injured, such as in sports.

How long do breast buds last?

The whole process from the breast bud stage until stage 5 usually takes about 3-4 years. During breast growth, you may experience some tenderness in your breasts. This is normal.

What does breast budding feel like?

As the breast buds grow, you may notice tingling, aching or itching in your chest, and your nipples may swell or become tender. This is all normal. After your periods begin, the changing hormones may make the breasts feel tender, painful or sore a week or so just before your period starts.

Is it normal to only have one breast bud?

I would reassure your daughter (and yourself!) that it is totally normal to have breast development on only one side at first. It does not mean that she will have a significant difference in the size of her breasts when she grows up. If she wants to start wearing a bra, that is fine.

Can breast buds come and go?

Asymmetrical breast buds are very common, as are breast buds that come and go, and cysts of the breasts. Breast disorders in children and adolescents can come from a variety of causes, some congenital and some acquired in nature.

Are breast buds hard and painful?

It starts with a firm, round, tender lump (called a breast bud) under the nipple of one or both breasts. Girls may complain about feeling sore when they sleep on their stomachs; parents occasionally worry about the lump being a cyst or tumor. One side may develop considerably faster than the other. (This is normal).

Do breast buds move?

It can be on only one side and is movable, not attached to the muscle or ribs beneath, and does not cause any pain. There is no discharge from the nipple, no dimpling of the skin in the area, and no evidence of infection.

How long after breast buds do periods start?

Breast buds usually grow about 2–2.5 years before your period starts, but if you notice your breast buds at an earlier age (when you’re 8 or 9), it may take closer to three years for your period to start.

Why is my daughter developing so early?

Some causes of early puberty in girls include thyroid disorders, abnormal brain structure, exposure to radiation therapy, or ovarian cysts. Genetic conditions may result in early puberty and can be detected with testing. In 90% of cases in girls, however, there is no known cause.

Why does my 2 year old have breasts?

Baby girls (and boys) often have breast buds (thelarche). In girls, these grow bigger during the first 6 to 18 months of life, but are usually regressing (growing softer) by 2 years of age. This is a normal physiologic process involving transient activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.
