Shaping grit or 60 90 grit is used in the first stage of rock tumbling. The 60 90 grit is a highly coarse grind of angular particles with sharp points to work the rocks. During this process, the coarse grit knocks down the sharp edges and grooves until they are smooth and ready for more delicate polishing.

Can I use sand as grit for rock tumbler?

Substituting sand for rock tumbler grit will not save money. Instead it will probably cost more time and electricity than the savings of grit that you achieve. It most likely will produce lower quality results. The only exception might be when tumbling very soft materials such as obsidian, marble, fluorite and calcite.
