Wild caught discus can be challenging to keep, due to their specialized water chemistry and dietary needs, however, most discus sold today are captive bred and are much easier to keep. That said, they are not for beginners for a variety of reasons.
Can you keep 1 discus?
(That’s why people recommend doing all those frequent water changes.) Many customers ask us, “Can I keep one discus?” Technically, the answer is yes. For example, dogs are technically pack animals, yet many people keep just one and then leave them home all day by themselves. It’s not ideal, but it’s doable.
How many discus fish do you need?
Discus should be kept together, and those of different varieties will also school together meaning you can have great color variations. A minimum of 5 is recommended, but more will look better and create a sturdier group.

Wild Discus will require soft, slightly acidic water and generally the only way to achieve this is to use a reverse osmosis filter. Some areas of the UK have soft water on tap, but, even then, it would be wise to run it through carbon.

In home aquariums, discus live for an average of 10 years, but can live up to 15 years, and can grow up to 8 inches.
How fast does discus grow?
The growth rate from 2 ½ inch to 4 inch keeping the fish in a small aquarium will only take four more months. If I were to raise the same fish in 100 gallon tanks there growth rate would be cut in half, and it would take eight months to a year to get up to the same 4 inch size.
Can discus live in tap water?
Tap Water. To keep Stendker Discus most of us in the UK will have the water we need straight out the tap, no need to soften it, no need to adjust the pH, just clean it up and use it. The fish are bred in soft-water, but raised in German tap water and have been so since 1966.
Can I keep 3 discus?
Keeping just 2 or 3 often results in 1 or 2 of them being badly mistreated, by 1 or 2 others, which produces a lot of stress and may well result in a fatality. If your tank is not large enough (min. around 55 gals), don’t attempt to keep less than 5 discus, or you’re asking for trouble.
What is the minimum tank size for discus fish?
Most discus in the common aquarium max out at 4.5-6 inches.
Based on this size range, the minimum tank size would be a 55 gallon tank, but the bigger the better for these guys. 3-5 discus should be doable in a 55gal aquarium as long as water changes are kept up with.
How do I know if my discus is happy?
A healthy Discus should always be lively, should have their fins open, and curious about what’s going on inside the tank and… outside. It’s attention towards the exterior is a good sign. Of course, we’re talking about a “shy” fish so its curiosity will not ever be comparable with that of a carp, as an example.
Can angelfish live with discus fish?
Angelfish are usually peaceful, but they can be aggressive when feeding and breeding. Discus fish are docile and may be deprived of food by angelfish. You can put them together but make sure the discus fish is eating.
Can I keep discus in a 40 gallon tank?
4 fish would do ok in that. I personally wouldn’t keep any less than 4 in anything less than a 55G. If the tank was totally bare, I would keep 6 in a 55G. A 75G planted with 6 discus in it would be a good start
How much does a 100 gallon aquarium cost?
A basic 100 gallon acrylic tank can cost anywhere from $800-$1000. Glass tanks can be found for around $500 but they are less durable and harder to keep clean. If you want a package then you should expect to pay anywhere from $1200 to $1500 for an acrylic tank with a stand and a hood.
How many discus are in a 350 Litre tank?
10 adult Discus (14cm +) without companion fish and minimal plants / bog wood etc will require a minimum of 350 litres. There is no doubt that having too few Discus will lead to behaviourally problems (aggression / attempting to breed) as they grow and mature….. remember Discus are cichlids !
What temperature should discus be?
Temperature ~84°F
The optimum aquarium temperature for Discus is around 82°F – 88°F (28°C-31°C). Note that higher temperatures such as these lower dissolved oxygen and limit the number of fish housed in the aquarium. When choosing other fish to go in the aquarium try and fit them in this temperature bound.
What do discus fish eat?
Discus benefit from being given a varied diet, rather than a single source of food. They are carnivorous and enjoy beefheart and bloodworms, although in the wild they would eat shrimp, insects, and even some small fish.
Can I keep discus in a community tank?
Although they are community fish and safe with small fish, a community tank containing Discus only works if the conditions the Discus need are met first and foremost.
