Rate Pressure Product

Rate Pressure Product

The rate-pressure product (RPP) was calculated as the product of heart rate and systolic arterial pressure for both baseline and maximum measures. The difference between the RPP max and the basal RPP is known as the RPP reserve.

What is the rate pressure product formula?

RPP was calculated by multiplying heart rate by systolic blood pressure throughout the test and maximum RPP (MRPP) was identified. HRR was adjusted for age as a percentage using the formula: (maximum heart rate-resting heart rate/APMHR-resting heart rate) ×100 [7].

What does a high RPP mean?

Any total value of RPP greater than 10,000 indicates a degree of risk for heart disease. The fittest individuals have resting RPP level around 5,000. RPP is indicative of the oxygen demand of the heart.

What is the normal range for peak RPP?

Most normal individuals develop a RPP of 20 to 35 mm Hg × beats/min × 10–3. In many patients with significant ischemic heart disease RPP values exceeding 25 mm Hg × beats/min × 10–3 are unusual (13).

How do you explain Valsalva maneuver?

The Valsalva maneuver is a breathing method that may slow your heart when it’s beating too fast. To do it, you breathe out strongly through your mouth while holding your nose tightly closed. This creates a forceful strain that can trigger your heart to react and go back into normal rhythm.

What does RPP reflect in the body?

RPP reflects the internal myocardial work performed by the beating heart whereas the performance of the external myocardial work is represented by the stages of exercise.

What is a good RPP?

RPP is defined by resting heart rate (RHR) multiplied by systolic blood pressure (SBP). Any total value greater than 10,000 indicates an increased risk for heart disease.

What is SBP in cardiology?

Systolic blood pressure (SBP) is a more frequent cardiovascular risk factor than diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and has a greater impact on blood pressure staging, though this can vary with age, sex and country.

What is RPP a surrogate measure of?

Rate pressure product (RPP), calculated by multiplying SBP and HR, is a valid non-invasive surrogate measure of myocardial oxygen consumption. Coronary blood flow, cardiac workload and left ventricular hypertrophy have also been found to be relative to RPP.

How does RPP change with exercise?

RPP changes during incremental exercise as increased exercise intensity raises both the HR and SBP; the RPP at maximal exercise is five times greater than it is at rest. In practical terms, RPP can be used as an exercise prescription guideline for cardiac patients (10).

Why does rate pressure product increase during exercise?

It is an important indicator of ventricular function. RPP varies with exercise. The peak rate pressure product (PRPP) which gives an accurate reflection of the myocardial oxygen demand and myocardial workload is the RPP at peak of exercise. The higher the PRPP, the more will be myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2).

What is normal RPP in stress test?

The rate pressure product offers a simple way to estimate oxygen demand and thus energy consumption of the heart. The aim during exercise stress testing is to achieve a rate pressure product of at least 25000, which indicates that the workload has been sufficient. Rate pressure product (RPP).

Is vagal and Valsalva the same?

The gag reflex stimulates the vagus nerve. Bearing Down: Medically referred to as the Valsalva Maneuver, this technique is one of the most common ways to stimulate the vagus nerve. The patient is instructed to bear down as if they were having a bowel movement.

How do you do vagal maneuver?

Valsalva maneuver

While lying on your back, take a deep breath and act like you’re exhaling but with your nose and mouth closed for 10 to 30 seconds. It should feel like trying to breathe air out into a blocked straw.

Is vagal and Valsalva maneuver the same?

Common vagal maneuvers include carotid sinus massage (CSM), Valsalva maneuver (VM), and diving reflex. This activity reviews the indications, contraindications, and techniques for administering vagal maneuvers.
