Periodontal charting is the process of measuring pockets – the space between a tooth and the gum tissue surrounding it. Your dentist or dental hygienist uses an instrument known as a probe and carefully inserts it into this space.
What is perio charting and when is it performed?
Periodontal charting, which is a part of your dental chart, refers to the six measurements (in millimeters) that are taken around each tooth. The charting is usually done during dental checkups. It’s a graphic method of organizing information about your dental health.
What is a six point periodontal charting?
Patients with BPE codes of 3, 4 and * require detailed periodontal charting. Six-point pocket charts should record probing depth and bleeding on probing (as well as recession, mobility and furcation involvement), at a minimum of all sites ≥4mm and bleeding on probing.
How often should you perio chart?
The AAP recommends annual periodontal charting/evaluation on all adult patients. Legal age considered for adulthood would be 18, but in many cases waiting until that age for the first periodontal chart to be recorded, a clinician will find themselves overlooking / documenting active infection.
Why do hygienist measure teeth?
What is Periodic Periodontal Probing? When you visit our office for your routine cleaning, you may notice that your hygienist measures your gum depths using a probing tool. This small part of your dental appointment helps us identify potential gum or periodontal disease.
Why is perio charting important?
Periodontal charting monitors your gum health by measuring the space between your teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. This information is vital because it can provide insights into the overall health of your teeth, gums, and jaws.
What is a perio pocket?
Periodontal pockets are spaces or openings surrounding the teeth under the gum line. These pockets can become filled with infection-causing bacteria. Periodontal pockets are a symptom of periodontitis (gum disease), a serious oral infection.
How do you shrink gum pockets?
Scaling and root planing helps to shrink periodontal pockets and can heal gum tissue. This treatment prevents further infection, and keeps your teeth and gums looking and feeling great. After scaling and root planing most patients notice their gums recede less, and they are restored.
When do you use a 6 point pocket chart?
The Full Periodontal Assessment
The BPE suggests that when a code 3 is scored, a 6 point probing pocket chart should be taken for that sextant. It might well be worth recording the whole mouth since it should be examined anyway. Where a code 4 or * is scored, a full mouth periodontal probing chart should be recorded.
What does sextant mean in dentistry?
Quick Reference. One of the three divisions of a dental arch; both arches are therefore divided up into six divisions. The anterior sextant of each arch includes the incisors and canines and the two posterior sextants include the premolars and molars. From: sextant in A Dictionary of Dentistry »
What measurements are taken in a periodontal chart?
Healthy tissue measures 1 to 3 millimeters and fits snugly around the tooth. Areas of concern measure 4 millimeters and deeper due to plaque and bacteria causing the tissue to be inflammed and pull away from the tooth. Areas with higher readings tend to be more sensitive to probing.
How long should perio charting take?
You definitely can’t do any undercover perio when appointments are only 30 minutes. That’s just enough time to do a perio charting and inform the patient of their disease status, offer options (nonsurgical therapy with you or surgery with the periodontist), and bring the dentist in.
Where is attached gingiva?
Attached gingiva – This tissue is adjacent to the free gingiva and is keratinized and firmly attached to the bone structure. It can range from 3-12 mm in height. Free gingiva – This tissue is not attached and forms a collar around the tooth.
How do you use Perio probe?
Slowly and gently insert the tip of the probe just under the gingival margin. Avoid pushing down too hard or fast because the tip of the probe can puncture the attachment and cause patient pain and inaccurate measurement. Always keep the tip of the probe as parallel as possible to the long end of the tooth.
Can a hygienist do D0180?
If the hygienist performed a full-mouth probing/charting, the appropriate exam code would be D0180 to reflect that service.
What age do you start perio probing?
Of the 346 respondents, about 54 percent said they use a probe to diagnose gum disease in this age group. They said they use a probe starting at, on average, age 13, but the ages range from 5 to 21.
What should a periodontal examination include?
A periodontal examination should include a periodontal probing, a radiographic analysis, a gingival index, mobility charting, and an evaluation of the amount of attached gingiva. These clinical exercises require simple instrumentation and a minimal amount of clinical calibration on the part of the examiner.
