Segmental Artery

Segmental Artery

Segmental medullary arteries are the larger vessels that, after supplying or dorsal or ventral root, continue on to reach and anastomose with the spinal arteries, thus providing the additional extrinsic blood supply to the spinal cord.

Where are segmental arteries located?

The orifices of the segmental arteries are situated on the right side (medial side) in the inner lumen of the aorta in the upper thoracic level, and the position gradually changes to the dorsal side from the cephalad to the caudal level, and finally the orifices are situated on the dorsal aspect of the aorta.

What is the function of the segmental artery?

Abstract. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The segmental arteries, which include the posterior intercostal, subcostal, and lumbar arteries, are gateways for performance of selective spinal arteriography of the thoracolumbar level.

How many segmental spinal arteries are there?

Blood Supply and Lymphatics

The main blood supply to the spinal cord is via the single anterior spinal artery (ASA) and the two posterior spinal arteries (PSA).

How many segmental arteries are contained in each kidney?

The arteries are mostly posterior to the veins. They divide close to the hilum into 5 segmental arteries, which are end-arteries (they do not anastomose significantly with adjacent branches).

Are there segmental veins in the kidney?

615-616) describes the segmental arteries and then explicitly states that the kidneys do not have segmental veins. Clement’s Anatomy illustrates and labels the segmental arteries, and illustrates the venous drainage without identifying or showing any segmental veins.

What are the branches of basilar artery?

The branches of the basilar artery can be divided into paramedian arteries, short circumferential arteries, and long circumferential arteries. The paramedian vessels are four to six in number, and they penetrate into the pontine parenchyma to supply the medial basal pons.

What is arcuate artery?

Arcuate artery (arteria arcuata) The arcuate artery of the foot is a branch of the dorsalis pedis artery. It courses on the dorsum of the foot, passing laterally over the bases of the metatarsal bones beneath the tendons of the extensor digitorum brevis muscle.

What are the 5 segmental arteries?

apical segmental artery (ASA), Upper segmental artery (USA), middle segmental artery (MSA), lower segmental artery (LSA) while the posterior branch continue as posterior segmental artery. The origins of segmental arteries were variable.

What is the largest artery in the body?

How large is the aorta? The aorta is the largest blood vessel in your body. It’s more than 1 foot long and an inch in diameter at its widest point.

Why is lumbar puncture done?

A lumbar puncture can help diagnose serious infections, such as meningitis; other disorders of the central nervous system, such as Guillain-Barre syndrome and multiple sclerosis; bleeding; or cancers of the brain or spinal cord.

Which artery carries blood to the brain?

The brain receives blood from two sources: the internal carotid arteries, which arise at the point in the neck where the common carotid arteries bifurcate, and the vertebral arteries (Figure 1.20).

Where is the proximal renal artery?

Right Renal Artery: Anteriorly, the proximal portion of the right renal artery is related to inferior vena cava, while the distal portion is related to the shorter right renal vein. These structures separate it from the second part of the duodenum and head of the pancreas.

What is the difference between Interlobular and interlobar?

An interlobar artery extends along the boundary of each renal lobe (renal column) and then branches at right angles to form an arcuate artery that runs along the corticomedullary junction (Fig. 11-7). Interlobular arteries branch from the arcuate artery and extend into the cortex.

Where is the cortical radiate artery?

The arcuate “bow shaped” arteries form arcs along the base of the medullary pyramids. Cortical radiate arteries, as the name suggests, radiate out from the arcuate arteries. The cortical radiate arteries branch into numerous afferent arterioles, and then enter the capillaries supplying the nephrons.
