A kerion is treated with oral antifungal medicines because the fungus grows deep into the hair follicle where topical creams and lotions cannot penetrate. Scalp ringworm and kerion usually require at least 6–8 weeks of treatment with oral antifungal pills or syrup, including: Griseofulvin. Terbinafine.
What causes kerion of the scalp?
A kerion is an abscess caused by fungal infection. It most often occurs on the scalp (tinea capitis), but it may also arise on any site exposed to the fungus such as face (tinea faciei) and upper limbs (tinea corporis). It is often misdiagnosed as bacterial infection.
What is a kerion on scalp?
Background/Aims Kerion is a scalp condition that occurs in severe cases of scalp ringworm (tinea capitis) with the highest prevalence in children 3 to 10 years of age. It appears as an inflamed, thickened, pus-filled area, with scaly spots or patches of broken hair on the scalp.
Will hair grow back after kerion?
Some children develop kerion, which is a boggy, tender swelling of the scalp, and can drain pus. Kerions are allergic reactions to the fungus and may require additional treatment with an oral steroid. Hair regrowth is normal, but may take 6 to 12 months.
Should you drain a kerion?
Evidence-Based Practice Pearl: Tinea Capitus and Kerions

Is kerion itchy?
Signs & symptoms
The overlying skin may ooze or be crusted, with localised alopecia; there is often regional lymphadenopathy. There may be systemic signs of infection such as fevers and nausea. In some patients, an extensive, itchy erythematous rash may appear – secondary to kerion.
What is scalp abscess?
Scalp abscesses are uncommon purulent infectious collections involving principally the subgaleal space (under the aponeurosis or epicranium). Subgaleal abscesses may be spontaneous, owing to contiguous spread (usually from a paranasal sinus infection to a chronic scalp lesion). Hematogenous infection is rare.
