Horizontal Fissure

Horizontal Fissure

The horizontal fissure (also called the minor fissure) is a unilateral structure in the right lung that separates the right middle lobe from the right upper lobe.

At what level is the horizontal fissure?

The horizontal fissure of the lung is a recess in the parenchyma of the right superior lobe of the lung. Its surface markings are from the level of the right fourth costal cartilage horizontally to a junction with the oblique fissure at approximately the midaxillary line in the fifth intercostal space.

Which has horizontal fissure?

The right lung has two fissures, oblique fissure and horizontal fissure, which separate the lung into three lobes – upper, middle, and lower. Each lobe has its own visceral pleural covering. Only the horizontal fissure is commonly seen on a frontal chest X-ray.

What are horizontal and oblique fissure?

The right lung is divided by the oblique fissure, which separates the inferior lobe from the middle and superior lobes, and the horizontal fissure, which separates the superior from the middle lobe. The human left lung is divided into two lobes, an upper and a lower, by the oblique fissure.

Does the left lung have a horizontal fissure?

The left horizontal fissure separates the lingula from the rest of the left upper lobe (anterior-apicoposterior segments).

What causes a fissure in the lung?

Congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema also might cause the fissure sign because of the associated pleural effusions (,1). Pleural thickening leads to the fissure sign by causing increased separation and severely reducing peripheral compliance, with the result being hypoperfusion.

Where does the horizontal fissure run?

– Horizontal fissure runs horizontally from the hilum to the anterior and lateral aspect of the right lung at the level of the 4th costal cartilage.

Is atelectasis serious?

Large areas of atelectasis may be life threatening, often in a baby or small child, or in someone who has another lung disease or illness. The collapsed lung usually reinflates slowly if the airway blockage has been removed. Scarring or damage may remain. The outlook depends on the underlying disease.

What rib does the horizontal fissure follow?

Gross anatomy

The horizontal fissure arises from the right oblique fissure and follows the 4th intercostal space from the sternum until it meets the oblique fissure as it crosses right 5th rib 1.

Where is the left major fissure in the lung?

The left oblique fissure separates the left upper lobe from the left lower lobe.

What are the fissures of the brain?

A fissure is a deeper grove and is often used interchangeably with sulcus. The cerebrum is divided into a left and right hemisphere by a longitudinal fissure that goes by many different names: longitudinal fissure, cerebral fissure, median longitudinal fissure, interhemispheric fissure.

What are the 5 lobes of the lungs?

The lung consists of five lobes. The left lung has a superior and inferior lobe, while the right lung has superior, middle, and inferior lobes. Thin walls of tissue called fissures separate the different lobes. Only the right lung has a middle lobe.

What is oblique fissure?

The oblique fissures (also called the major fissures or greater fissures) are bilateral structures in both lungs separating the lung lobes.

What lobes of the right lung are separated by the horizontal fissure?

Each lung has an oblique fissure separating the upper lobes from the lower lobes and the right lung has a horizontal fissure that separates the right upper lobe from the middle lobe.

What is the function of oblique fissure?

The oblique fissure, which extends from the costal to the mediastinal surface of the lung both above and below the hilum. It divides the left lung in an upper and a lower lobe and in the right lung, separates the inferior from the middle and superior lobes, and is closely aligned with the fissure in the left lung.

What does lung fissure mean?

Abstract. A pulmonary fissure is a boundary between the lobes in the lungs. Its segmentation is of clinical interest as it facilitates the assessment of lung disease on a lobar level.

Which situation will happen when you have emphysema?

When emphysema develops, the alveoli and lung tissue are destroyed. With this damage, the alveoli cannot support the bronchial tubes. The tubes collapse and cause an “obstruction” (a blockage), which traps air inside the lungs. Too much air trapped in the lungs can give some patients a barrel-chested appearance.
