Hardie® Backer cement board is a tile underlayment made to use on walls, with floors and countertops. What’s the difference between cement board and Hardibacker?
HardieBacker is much more light, and it is also the best selling brand of cement board available. It is much cleaner because it does not have any glass in it. It allows for a smooth job with minimal mess. As a bonus, HardieBacker board has an EZ Grid pattern so you can cut perfect lines.

Do you have to put thinset under Hardibacker?
However, many manufacturers including, both Durock and Hardiebacker not only recommend that you use thinset under their backerboard, but they specify it and will void the warranty on their product if it’s not used.
Can you tile straight onto HardieBacker?
HardieBacker can take up to 200kg of tile hanging weight per m2 so almost any tile can be fixed. Screws should remain 100mm from the top and bottom edges and 50mm from the left and right edges. Ensure you do not overdrive the screws and the screw remains flush with the front of the board.
Can I paint cement backer board?
It is recommended not to paint cement boards unless they have been thoroughly cleaned, or if they have adhesion problems. The pores in fibrous cement boards, unlike standard cement, absorb the adhesives within the paint, making the finish much more durable than that of standard cement.
Is Hardibacker good for shower walls?
1/4″ hardibacker alone is an unsuitable substrate for shower wall tile. If it were attached to properly waterproofed drywall, plywood, or plaster it would be fine. Think about it, one wayward elbow, knee, or hip bump and you may get flexion which would cause the grout (or tile) to crack.
Can I use Hardibacker outside?

What is better durock or Hardibacker?
It is far heavier and more difficult to cut. Durock is also more abrasive than HardieBacker. It can damage delicate materials such as vinyl, porcelain, and enamel. In fact, the official Durock warranty officially does not cover usage with vinyl tile as that can damage both the cement boards and the tiles.
Can I tile directly onto cement board?
There is no need to install backer board on a concrete substrate—ceramic tile can be applied right over concrete, provided the surface is flat, smooth, and free of significant cracks.
Can you tile directly over HardieBacker board?
HardieBacker® cement board may be installed under or over Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) and other resilient flooring.
Do I need to seal cement board before tiling?
Although most backerboards currently available won’t fall apart when exposed to moisture and are somewhat water-resistant, they aren’t waterproof. To prevent moisture from seeping through to the wood or metal studs beneath the tile, a barrier or sealant must be used on porous materials.
Can you just screw down cement board?

Drill cement board screws through the backer board sheets every 6 to 8 inches. Position the screws at least 1/2-inch, but no more than 2 inches, from the edge of the sheet.
Do you have to tape seams on Hardibacker?
For tile backer boards such as Durock, Wonderboard, Hardiebacker, Permabase, and others the seams between the board need to be treated with 2-inch alkali-resistant mesh tape. Then a coat of thinset gets flat troweled over the seam. What this does is tie the two boards together and help prevent flexing.
Can you install cement board without thinset?
Not only is thinset a critical component underneath cement board but the other critical component is the fasteners. And you won’t have the fasteners if you are trying to install it over concrete.
How far apart should screws be in Hardiebacker?
Using the screw pattern as a guide, fasten your HardieBacker Cement Board with nails or screws every 8” on center over the entire surface. 4. Keep screws between ⅜” and ¾” from board edges and 2” from board corners.
