Moho Occupational Therapy

Model of Human Occupation. The Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) explains how occupations are motivated, patterned and performed within everyday environments (Kielhofner, 2008).

What is the MOHO approach?

The Model of Human Occupations (MOHO) is a model that describes how humans generate and modify their occupations in interaction with environment, which presents a dynamic open cycle system of human actions.

What is the purpose of MOHO?

The MOHO primarily focuses on explaining the volitional processes, roles, and habits that guide and structure people’s participation in occupation; the motor, process, communication, and interaction skills that underlie performance; and the subjective experience of engaging in occupation.

What is MOHO assessment?

An assessment that addresses the majority of MOHO concepts: volition (motivation for occupation), habituation (pattern of occupation), communication and interaction skills, motor skills, process skills, environment in order to gain an overview of occupational functioning.

How is MOHO used in mental health?

The MOHO is a complex model used primarily by occupational therapists. The model helps therapists understand a person’s view of themselves and their priorities, and, therefore, how best to support the client in accomplishing their goals.

How does MOHO define healthy or optimal functioning?

According to MOHO, when the human open system is functioning optimally, order exists within the system. What does the MOHO theory consider human beings?

MOHO is a client-centered model that is grounded in occupational therapy practice. The model views human beings as dynamic systems that interact with their environment. Human behavior is a result of interactions between inherent human elements and environmental influences.

Is MOHO holistic?

MOHO takes a holistic approach working from top down beginning with the actual occupation. MOHO considers human beings to be an open system consisting of volitional, habituation, and performance capacity and considers how these three aspects interact with each other and the environment.

What depth is the MOHO?

Also termed the Mohorovicic’ discontinuity after the Croatian seismologist Andrija Mohorovicic’ (1857-1936) who discovered it. The boundary is between 25 and 60 km deep beneath the continents and between 5 and 8 km deep beneath the ocean floor.

Is MOHOST reliable?

Findings from this study contributed additional evidence that support the conclusion that the MOHOST subscales are reliable and valid. Findings also indicated that the MOHOST is an adequately sensitive measure capable of discriminating between clients.

Is MOHOST an outcome measure?

The MOHOST was found to be a useful tool for practice in terms of overall usefulness, as an outcome measure, guiding interventions, or providing a comprehensive overview of an individual.

Is the MOHOST a self assessment?

The MOHOST Self-Assessment (MOHOST-SA) was originally designed by an occupational therapist in the UK who was adept at using the MOHOST to provide feedback to her clients regarding their progress.
