PT/INR too low- A low INR means indicates the patient’s anticoagulation dose is too low and their blood is clotting too quickly putting them at risk for a blood clot. Symptoms of a low INR- Patients may not always know if their INR levels are too low until they experience symptoms of a clot, either DVT, PE or CVA.

What is a low INR level?

What does a low INR in a blood test mean? A low level of INR (International Normalized Ratio) shows a decrease in the time necessary to complete the clotting process. When there is a hemorrhage, the clotting process is activated to stop the bleeding. Therefore, the hemorrhages are stopped quickly.

Can a low INR make you tired?

They can make you feel green.

Low blood cell count can cause fatigue, weakness, dizziness and shortness of breath.

How do you treat a low INR patient?

Drugs that can decrease warfarin effect & lower INR in some pts include antacids, antihistamines, barbiturates, rifampin, sucralfate, trazodone, carbamazepine, cholestyramine, griseofulvin, haloperidol, oral contraceptives, penicillin, dicloxacillin, and nafcillin.

What does an INR of 1.2 mean?

In healthy people an INR of 1.1 or below is considered normal. An INR range of 2.0 to 3.0 is generally an effective therapeutic range for people taking warfarin for disorders such as atrial fibrillation or a blood clot in the leg or lung.

What does an INR of 1.5 mean?

A result of 1.0, up to 1.5, is therefore normal. A low INR result means your blood is ‘not thin enough’ or coagulates too easily and puts you at risk of developing a blood clot. A high INR result means your blood coagulates too slowly and you risk bleeding.

Is an INR of 1.9 too low?

An INR of 1.9 or less is associated with an almost doubling of risk for thrombosis compared to an INR within the therapeutic range. So, a dose increase is likely warranted.

How can I raise my INR levels?

A nice “rule of thumb” for dose adjustments near the target range (generally works for INRs from the high 1s to low 4s): If you want to change the INR by 0.5-1 unit, increase or decrease the weekly dose by a daily dose. Example: Your patient has been taking warfarin 5mg daily for more than 2 weeks and INR is 1.8.

What causes INR levels to drop?

With an increase in vitamin K , your INR level may drop. Conversely, a decrease in vitamin K intake may increase the INR. Other things, like medications, antibiotics, and herbal products may also influence your INR.

No significant difference in the relationship between INR level and fasting glucose was shown by Pearson test (r = 0.070, P = 0.184).

Why do you take warfarin at 6pm?

It’s usual to take warfarin in the evening. This is so that if you need to change the dose after a routine blood test, you can do this the same day rather than waiting until the following morning. Warfarin does not usually upset your stomach, so you can take it whether you have eaten recently or not.

What foods can raise your INR?

The most common foods with high vitamin K are green leafy vegetables such as kale, collard greens, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, and lettuce. Foods with vitamin K that could affect warfarin are listed on the next 2 pages. Other foods that could affect warfarin are beef liver or other animal liver products.

Does vitamin K decrease INR?

Vitamin K can change how warfarin works, which changes your INR. Vitamin K lowers your INR values. The lower your INR, the less time it takes for your blood to clot.
