TJI stands for Truss Joist I-Joist. The engineered wood I-joist can be used for joists or trusses, are stronger and lighter than dimensional lumber of similar widths, and can span greater distances. The truss-joists are engineered to resist twisting and warping, and won’t shrink like dimensional lumber.

Can you drill holes in TJI?

In fact, you can put holes that go almost all the way from the bottom to the top of the joist. TJI, for example, say you just need to leave 1/8″ of webbing remaining! For people used to looking at dimensional lumber, these holes look very, very wrong… but they’re actually fine.

Holes may be drilled anywhere along the length of the stud or column but must be at least 5″ from the edge.
Can TJI be cut?
Fire cuts are permitted on TJI joists provided: The TJI® joist has sufficient bearing, The cut does not extend past the inside face of the wall. The joist has full depth lateral support.
Can you notch a TJI?
Notch will only be allowed in a TJI joist member of one ply. TJI product can only have one notch per joist member. Notch will only be analyzed when the length parallel to the joist member span does not exceed 4 inches.
Can I-joist be cut?
You can cut a notch at the end of the joist to 1/4 of the joist’s depth (maximum). Along the outer third of a joist, you can cut a notch a maximum of 1/6 the joist depth and 1/3 the joist length without compromising its strength.
How do you reinforce TJI joists?
The best way to strengthen floor joists from underneath is to make a supporting mid-span beam or wall beneath the wobbling joists. Using jack posts or 6×6 posts and 2×10 or 2×8 beams perpendicular to the joists will solve any wobble and ensure your joists never move again.
What size does LVL come in?
Sizes may vary according to manufacturer but Georgia Pacific says LVL standard thicknesses are 1 3/4 inches and 3 1/2 inches. Lengths are generally available in 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 and 44 feet with special orders of up to 60 feet.
