In the US we generally say “bind off” to refer to finishing the edge of a knitting project, while in the UK, they generally say “cast off”. Whichever term your pattern uses, the technique is exactly the same!
Which side do you bind off when knitting?
I prefer Casting Off on the Right Side of my work, which is the front side. If you are working your knitting project from a pattern, it will tell you when it is time to cast off. You usually end a pattern after knitting the wrong side, or backside, so I’m going to start our Cast Off row on the right side.
What does bind 3 mean in knitting?
The three needle bind off is a technique for seaming together two pieces of fabric, while binding off at the same time.
What does bind off mean in knitting patterns?
In knitting, binding off, or casting off, is a family of techniques for ending a column (a wale) of stitches. Binding off is typically used to define the final (usually upper, taking the cast on edge as the lower) edge of a knitted fabric, although it may also be used in other contexts, e.g., in making button holes.
Is casting off Considered a row?
The cast on doesn’t count as a row. But it’s easier to count all the rows in the worked fabric, below the needle, and just not count the loops on the needle.
Should I bind off Knitwise or Purlwise?
How to bind off knitwise and purlwise? If your pattern tells you to bind off knitwise that means that you should use the knit stitch as you work the last row at the same time you finish off your knitting. The same applies if the pattern says purlwise, then you work the last row with purl stitches.
Do you cast off on the right or wrong side?
Typically you cast off stitches on the right side (so after you finished the last return row). But you can use this technique on the wrong side as well or even in the middle of a project. E.g. to shape the armpits or the neckline of a sweater.
