Definition and Function
Anatomic function: A tissue covering the inside of the heart, the endocardium keeps the blood flowing through the heart separate from the myocardium, or cardiac muscles. It also lines the valves, which open and close to regulate blood flow through the chambers of the heart.
What is the difference between endocardium and pericardium?
As nouns the difference between endocardium and pericardium
is that endocardium is (anatomy|cardiology) a thin serous membrane that lines the interior of the heart while pericardium is (anatomy|cardiology) a serous membrane that surrounds the heart allowing it to contract.
What is endocardium composed of?
The endocardium is composed of the endothelium and the subendothelial connective tissue layer. The subendocardium is found between the endocardium and myocardium and contains the impulse-conducting system.
What does the endocardium consist of?
The ventricular endocardium is composed of five distinct layers: the endothelial layer, the inner connective tissue layer, the elastic tissue layer, the smooth muscle cell layer, and the outer connective tissue layer or subendocardial layer.
What is pericardium myocardium endocardium?
The endocardium underlies the much more voluminous myocardium, the muscular tissue responsible for the contraction of the heart. The outer layer of the heart is termed epicardium and the heart is surrounded by a small amount of fluid enclosed by a fibrous sac called the pericardium.
What is pericardium and myocardium?
Myocardium refers to the muscular tissue of the heart, which is made up of heart muscles while pericardium refers to the membrane enclosing the heart, consisting of an outer fibrous layer and an inner double layer of serous membrane.
What are the two upper chambers of the heart called?
A typical heart has two upper and two lower chambers. The upper chambers — the right and left atria — receive incoming blood. The lower chambers — the right and left ventricles — pump blood out of your heart.
How thick is the endocardium?
The endocardium which covers the papillary muscle has a thickness of 0.5 micron. The endocardial cells lie on the myocardium so close and so thin that the surface relief and part of the atriation of the myocardium are visible (Figs 13-15).
What are the 3 layers of the heart?
The walls of the heart are composed of three layers:
Epicardium – the outer layer.Myocardium – the middle, muscular layer.Endocardium – the inner layer.
What is the deepest layer in the wall of the heart?
The endocardium is the innermost layer of the heart. It lines the inner surfaces of the heart chambers, including the heart valves.
What is mural endocardium?
(myū’răl en’dō-kahr-dī’tis) Inflammation of the endocardium involving the walls of the chambers of the heart.
What is epicardial and endocardial?
The mechanism of most VTs are reentry circuits which are typically found in areas of scar in the left or right chamber. These scar areas may be located in the inner layer of the myocardium (endocardial), in the outer layer (epicardial) or in all layers of the heart muscle (transmural).
What artery supplies the endocardium?
In teleosts, the endocardial cells are supplied primarily by the venous blood from the intertrabecular spaces of the ventricular lumen; whereas, the epicardium is nourished by discrete coronary arteries providing oxygenated blood (Tota, 1989).
