Ventral Ramus

Ventral Ramus

The brachial plexus is formed from portions of the spinal nerve roots at the C5 through T1 levels, known as the ventral rami. Each spinal nerve root separates into this ventral ramus and a dorsal ramus immediately after leaving its spinal foramen.

What’s the difference between dorsal and ventral ramus?

Key Points. The dorsal and ventral rami contain nerves that provide visceral motor, somatic motor, and sensory information, with the dorsal ramus feeding the dorsal trunk (skin and muscles of the back), and the ventral ramus feeding the ventral trunk and limbs through the ventrolateral surface.

What is the dorsal ramus?

The dorsal ramus of spinal nerve (or posterior ramus of spinal nerve, or posterior primary division) is the posterior division of a spinal nerve. The dorsal ramus (Latin for branch, plural rami ) is the dorsal branch of a spinal nerve that forms from the dorsal root of the nerve after it emerges from the spinal cord.

What parts of the body does the ventral ramus service?

The ventral ramus (anterior ramus, anterior branch, anterior divisions of the spinal nerves) supply the antero-lateral parts of the trunk, and the limbs; they are for the most part larger than the posterior divisions.

What is found in ventral rami?

Ventral rami of the spinal nerves carry sensory and motor fibres for the innervation of the muscles, joints, and skin of the lateral and ventral body walls and the extremities. Both dorsal and ventral rami also contain autonomic fibres.

What is dorsal and ventral side?

Anterior or ventral – front (example, the kneecap is located on the anterior side of the leg). Posterior or dorsal – back (example, the shoulder blades are located on the posterior side of the body). Medial – toward the midline of the body (example, the middle toe is located at the medial side of the foot).

Is dorsal sensory or motor?

nerves. The dorsal root is sensory and the ventral root motor; the first cervical nerve may lack the dorsal root. Oval swellings, the spinal ganglia, characterize the dorsal roots.

What are nerve branches?

Distal branches: After emerging from the vertebral column, the spinal nerve divides into a posterior ramus, an anterior ramus, and a small meningeal branch that leads to the meninges and vertebral column. The posterior ramus innervates the muscles and joints of the spine and the skin of the back.

What muscles are innervated by ventral rami?

Spinal Nerve Innervation

The ventral ramus contains nerves that serve the remaining ventral parts of the trunk and the upper and lower limbs (hypaxial muscles); they carry visceral motor, somatic motor, and sensory information to and from the ventrolateral body surface, structures in the body wall, and the limbs.

What is the function of dorsal rami?

nerve divides into ventral and dorsal rami. All dorsal rami (with the exception of those from C1, S4, S5, and Coc1) have medial and lateral branches, which innervate deep back muscles and overlying skin. The medial and lateral branches of the dorsal rami of spinal nerves C2–C8 supply both the…

Is ventral a motor?

In anatomy and neurology, the ventral root of spinal nerve, anterior root, or motor root is the efferent motor root of a spinal nerve.

Is the ventral root sensory or motor?

The dorsal root is sensory and the ventral root motor; the first cervical nerve may lack the dorsal root. Oval swellings, the spinal ganglia, characterize the dorsal roots. They are formed of nerve cells that give rise to the sensory nerve fibres.

What happens if the ventral ramus is damaged?

When such damage occurs the motor neurons die, their axons in the ventral root die and the muscles that they innervate eventually die. The muscle dies because it has lost its source of nourishment or trophic source (trophic = nourishment). When the muscle dies it ATROPHIES or shrinks-up.

What is the role of ventral root?

the motor root of a spinal nerve, which carries motor information from the spinal cord to the rest of the body and leaves from the anterior side of the cord.

Does the ventral root have a ganglion?

Each spinal cord segment has two ventral roots that connect by a white ramus to a spinal sympathetic ganglion. These ganglia communicate with each other up and down the spinal cord, forming two sympathetic chains, one on each side of the vertebral column.

What does the ventral root of the spinal cord contain?

Ventral root fibers are the axons of motor and visceral efferent fibers and emerge from poorly defined ventral lateral sulcus as ventral rootlets. The ventral rootlets from discrete spinal cord section unite and form the ventral root, which contain motor nerve axons from motor and visceral motor neurons.

Is the ventral root afferent or efferent?

The dorsal roots are generally “afferent,” formed by the central projections of the sensory cells, and the ventral roots “efferent,” comprising the axons of spinal motor and autonomic neurons.
