Humidity Dome

Humidity Dome

A humidity dome is a cover used on top of a container that holds the growing medium (soil) and seeds. A humidity dome may be made of plastic or glass. You can make your own humidity dome from plastic bottles, plastic wrap, trays, pots, and food containers.

How long do I keep the humidity dome on?

Humidity domes are meant to stay on the tray until the first sign of germination or once you begin to see the tray sprout. After this, remove the dome and place your trays under light, with proper air circulation.

How do you control humidity in the dome?

So cut back on the watering and prop one end of the dome open a couple of times a day to allow moisture to escape and fresh air to circulate. If necessary, remove it completely and leave it off for a couple of hours a day – it isn’t required anyway and excess moisture and wet soil can do more damage than good.

Should I cover my seedlings?

To speed germination, cover the pots with plastic wrap or a plastic dome that fits over the seed-starting tray. This helps keep the seeds moist before they germinate. When you see the first signs of green, remove the cover.

How many hours of light do seedlings need?

In general, seedlings should receive roughly 14 to 16 hours of light a day when situated in a south-facing window. This can be very difficult to achieve, and most growers opt to use artificial lights for their seedlings. These fluorescent lights should be left on for 12 to 16 hours a day.

Do you need a dome to start seeds?

DO remove the plastic humidity dome after your seeds germinate. Domes are really only used on the trays until the seeds germinate, which for some varieties may be as few as a few days. Once your plants have popped up, they need lots of air and light. Left on too long, domes can kill seedlings.

How much humidity is needed for germination?

Critical factors for germination include moisture, oxygen, temperature and light. Seeds from the packet are at 4 – 12% moisture content. To germinate this needs to be increased to 25 to 50%. Select a growing media that has good water holding capacity, adequate drainage and allows good contact with the seed.

How long can seedlings stay in trays?

Seedlings otherwise can become root-bound if not given adequate space for the roots. Typically, after sowing the seeds, the cell trays are used for around 3-4 weeks before transplanting occurs – whether it be to an outdoor plot or into a larger container.

Do seedlings need heat after germination?

Your seeds must be subjected to consistent heating to keep the propagation process going. Signs of successful germination will include small sprouts popping up from the dirt, and leaves starting to form from those sprouts. It is at this point when you may remove your tray from the seedling mat and turn it off.

What should the humidity be for Autoflowers?

For this reason, autoflowers in the seedling stage require higher humidity levels; with their roots yet to grow, higher humidity allows seedlings to absorb water through their leaves. For this reason, we recommend keeping humidity levels between 65-70% during the seedling stage of the growing cycle.

How often should you water seedlings?

You want seedlings to be kept moist but not wet and never allowed to dry out completely. This most often translates to watering the soil for your seedlings at least once per day, if not more often. A spray bottle is a good way to water your seedlings and keep the soil moist without letting it get too wet.

How do I make my seedlings stronger?

Put a small fan next to your seedlings on a timer so that the plants are blown in the breeze for a couple of hours a day and gently passing your hand over the tops of seedlings a few times every day to stimulate stronger growth.

Do seeds germinate better in the dark?

Most seeds germinate best under dark conditions and might even be inhibited by light (e.g., Phacelia and Allium spp.). However, some species (e.g., Begonia, Primula, Coleus) need light to germinate (Miles and Brown 2007). Don’t confuse seed light requirements with what seedlings need. All seedlings require sunlight.
