Female Perineum

Female Perineum

The female perineum is a diamond-shaped structure inferior to the pelvic diaphragm, between the symphysis pubis and coccyx and between the inner aspects of the thighs.

What is the function of the perineum?

The perineum is the area between the genitals and the anus. 7 It supports the pelvic floor, the bottom of the pelvic cavity that holds your intestines, bladder, and other internal organs. Muscles and nerves that run through this small area control sexual function and the urinary and excretory systems.

What’s a perineum?

The perineum protects the pelvic floor muscles and the blood vessels that supply the genitals and urinary tract. The perineum also protects the nerves used to urinate or have an erection. In males, the perineum is the area between the anus and the scrotum.

When should you start massaging your perineum?

Start perineal massage when you’re about 34 weeks pregnant and aim to do it at least once or twice a week. Doing it more often than this may not decrease your risk of episiotomy or tear any further.

What does the perineum look like?

Perineum: This is the small section of triangularly shaped fibro muscular tissue that begins at the base of the vulva and extends to the anus. The distance between the two can vary greatly from female to female. As with all lady parts, there are no set measurements that are considered ‘normal’ or ‘abnormal’.

What is the difference between perineal and perineum?

The perineal body (PB), also referred to as the central tendon of the perineum, is a fibro-muscular structure located in the midline of the perineum. Its exact location is the midline of the perineum at the junction of the anus and urogenital triangle in both females and males.

How are patients wiped during perineal care?

Moving from front to back, use warm water and a clean washcloth (or disposable wipes) to clean the perineal area. For females, this involves cleaning the inner legs, labia, and groin area while for men it requires cleaning the tip and shaft of the penis, along with the scrotum.

Can you get hemorrhoids on perineum?

Pudendal nerve entrapment — This is nerve damage in your pelvis. Surrounding muscle or tissue compresses the nerve, causing pain.

Does perineal massage actually work?

For a first pregnancy, perineal massage has a modest and definitely measurable impact on reducing the need for stitches (either from tearing or an episiotomy). This translates to reducing the need for stitches by approximately 10 percent and the need for episiotomy by approximately 15 percent.

How important is perineal massage?

What are the benefits of perineal massage? Perineal massage in pregnancy can help to soften and increase the elasticity of the perineal tissue. This can in turn lead to a reduction in perineal tears that require stitching, as well as a reduction in the need for an episiotomy (a small cut into the perineum).

Does perineal massage hurt?

Perineal massage shouldn’t hurt, though you may feel pressure in the first few weeks of starting, which should ease.
