Foliation

Foliation

Foliated Metamorphic Rocks:

(Foliated means the parallel arrangement of certain mineral grains that gives the rock a striped appearance.) Foliation forms when pressure squeezes the flat or elongate minerals within a rock so they become aligned.

What causes foliation?

How Foliation Develops. When a rock is acted upon by pressure that is not the same in all directions, or by shear stress (forces acting to “smear” the rock), minerals can become elongated in the direction perpendicular to the main stress. The pattern of aligned crystals that results is called foliation.

What are the 3 types of foliation?

There are three types of foliated rocks: slate, schist, and gneiss.

What happens during foliation?

Foliation occurs in metamorphism when pressure is high enough in one orientation so as to flatten the parent rock material or to induce the platy minerals to crystallize in an orientation perpendicular to the direction of the highest pressure.

What is foliated and Nonfoliated rock?

Foliated rocks have platy or elongate minerals aligned in roughly parallel planes or in wavy bands or planes. Nonfoliated rocks may show colored bands that reflect minute impurities in the rock, but the dominant minerals show no visible alignment.

What are foliated rocks distinguished by?

If a rock is foliated, its name is determined by the type of foliation present and the dominant minerals—for example, a kyanite schist. If the minerals are segregated into alternating light‐colored and dark‐colored layers, the rock is called a gneiss.

What type of rock is basalt?

Basalt. Basalt is a hard, black volcanic rock. Basalt is the most common rock type in the Earth’s crust. Depending on how it is erupted, basalt can be hard and massive (Figure 1) or crumbly and full of bubbles (Figure 2).

Does directed stress cause foliation?

When a rock is squeezed under directed pressure during metamorphism it is likely to be deformed, and this can result in a textural change such that the minerals are elongated in the direction perpendicular to the main stress (Figure 7.5). This contributes to the formation of foliation.

Is foliation caused by differential stress?

Metamorphic Rock Types

There are two major subdivisions of metamorphic rocks. Foliated – These have a planar foliation caused by the preferred orientation (alignment) of minerals and formed under differential stress.

What type of rock is scoria?

scoria, heavy, dark-coloured, glassy, pyroclastic igneous rock that contains many vesicles (bubblelike cavities).

What do granite and basalt have in common?

Basalt and granite actually have quite a bit in common. Both are igneous rocks, which means that they cooled from a magma (the earth gets very hot just below the surface, and there is lots of liquid rock available). Both are made up of minerals from the silicate group, so both have large amounts of silicon and oxygen.

What is the difference between bedding and foliation?

As nouns the difference between bedding and foliation

is that bedding is the textiles associated with a bed, eg, sheets, pillowcases, bedspreads, blankets, etc while foliation is the process of forming into a leaf or leaves.

Where does burial metamorphism occur?

Burial metamorphism commonly occurs in sedimentary basins, where rocks are buried deeply by overlying sediments. As an extension of diagenesis, a process that occurs during lithification (Chapter 5), burial metamorphism can cause clay minerals, such as smectite, in shales to change to another clay mineral illite.

What is the project of foliated?

Answer. Answer: Foliated metamorphic rocks such as gneiss, phyllite, schist, and slate have a layered or banded appearance that is produced by exposure to heat and directed pressure. Non-foliated metamorphic rocks such as hornfels, marble, quartzite, and novaculite do not have a layered or banded appearance.

Is Basalt a rock or mineral?

Basalt is a mafic extrusive rock, is the most widespread of all igneous rocks, and comprises more than 90% of all volcanic rocks. Because of its relatively low silica content, basalt lava has a comparatively low viscosity, and forms thin flows that can travel long distances.

What does a non-foliated rock look like?

Exposure to these extreme conditions has altered the mineralogy, texture, and chemical composition of the rocks. Non-foliated metamorphic rocks do not have a layered or banded appearance. Examples of nonfoliated rocks include: hornfels, marble, novaculite, quartzite, and skarn.

What do foliated rocks look like?

The foliated metamorphic rocks normally have a layered or banded appearance. They have aligned textures that are might be one of four different varieties. The word ‘foliated’ is a special term that means that the rocks have a striped appearance due to the parallel arrangement of some of the mineral grains.

Which are examples of non-foliated rocks?

Nonfoliated metamorphic rocks lack foliated texture because they often lack platy minerals such as micas. They commonly result from contact or regional metamorphism. Examples include marble, quartzite, greenstone, hornfel, and anthracite.
