How to Calculate Even Deck Baluster Spacing
Measure the length of the space between the end supports of the balustrade. Divide that length by four to determine the number of spaces you will need while having a minimum of 4 inches distance between balusters.

How do you measure knee wall baluster spacing?
For balconies and knee walls, measure the opening between the bottom square block of the newel and either the opposing newel or wall. Add the thickness of the baluster to this measurement. Example: if the opening between two newel posts is 71″ and the balusters are 1-1/4″ square, then add 71″ + 1-1/4″ = 72-1/4″.

I’m not clear on what dimension you refer to by the term “depth” – but the 4″ opening between space is within common guidelines.
Are balusters and spindles the same thing?
A baluster and spindle is actually almost the same thing, but the word spindle is more commonly used because it is easier to remember and say. Balusters usually rest on a footing; this could be a step, floor or deck, whereas, spindles are supported by a horizontal rail at the bottom that is attached to the posts.
