Restor-A-Finish penetrates and permanently restores most wood finishes without removing any of the existing finish – this is why it is very popular for antiques. Restor-A-Finish maintains the original “patina” of an antique finish, maintaining its character and value as an antique.
How well does Restor-A-Finish work?
Restor-A-Finish should soak in, taking the stain with it – restoring the finish to its original color and luster. It works best on shellac, lacquer and most other finishes. Harder finishes such as polyurethane will absorb less of the stain/restorer, but will still look much better after Restor-A-Finish is applied.
What do you put over a Restor finish?
After using Restor-A-Finish, most of the time, Feed-N-Wax is used to maintain the “restored” look. Feed-N-Wax adds shine, protection, and is the perfect follow up to Restor-A-Finish.
Can you put polyurethane over Howard’s Restor-A-Finish?
Be careful to protect fabric, carpets, or linoleum when applying Restor-A-Finish, as it may leave a permanent stain. If spilling does occur, immediately scrub area with soap and water or a stain remover and wipe dry. Do not use polyurethane over Restor-A-Finish.
Does Restor-A-Finish smell?
Pros: Restor-A-Finish removes cosmetic surface water spots and minimizes scratches, it comes in several shades, and is great for beginners who don’t want to take on a full refinishing job. Cons: Restor-A-Finish is really stinky but the odor dissipates quickly. It should be used only in a well ventilated area.
Can you sand before using Restor-A-Finish?
The wood surface should be free from heavy dust, grime, grease and dirt before using Restor-A-Finish. Most of the time, you do not need to pre-clean before using Restor-A-Finish.
Does Restor-A-Finish seal?
Can You Seal Over Restor-a-finish? Restor-A-Finish should not be applied with polyurethane. Restor-A-Finish is intended to restore an existing finish, so be aware of this. Feed-N-Wax is all you need to finish top.
Can you use Restor-A-Finish on kitchen cabinets?
It still is the only product on the market that will restore the stain on your cabinets without removing the varnish. Apply Restor-A-Finish to the cabinet doors with a soft cloth and wipe in one direction. Any discoloration will be blended away, and a restored color will be left.

Can I use tung oil over Restor-A-Finish?

Can I put varnish over Restor-A-Finish?
No. Keep in mind that the purpose of Restor-A-Finish is to restore an EXISTING finish. If your goal is to improve the shine, we recommend following up with our Restor-A-Shine Polishing Compound.
Can I paint over Restor-A-Finish?
Yes. In most cases, Restor-A-Finish is used only once, and then Feed-N-Wax, Orange Oil, or Lemon Oil is used to maintain the restored finish. Restor-A-Finish can penetrate most finishes, so it can also “bloom” back out, so do not soak or leave it on for too long.
