Do Not:

What is a Unna boot used for?

The Unna boot is a compressive dressing used in the treatment of venous stasis ulcers (Fig. 26.12). The gauze is applied wet, similar to a cast, and dries to form a semirigid mold against the skin. Unlike a cast, it allows for unrestricted motion of the ankle joint.

How long do you wear an Unna boot?

The Unna paste is melted in a hotwater bath (for about 15 minutes ) before being embedded in the bandage. The device can then be applied like a plaster cast to the leg until it dries in roughly 5 minutes. The boot needs to kept in place for seven days and protected in the shower.

When should you not use Unna boot?

Not intended for use on patients with a known hypersensitivity to the product itself or to its components, including zinc oxide. Management of arterial and mixed venous/arterial leg ulcers. Not intended to provide compression therapy in non-ambulatory patients. 3″x10yd, 4″x10yd.
