Commotio Retinae

Commotio Retinae

Treatment of commotio retinae is expectant. The majority of patients can expect full recovery with minimal sequelae. However, those with severe commotio or macula-involving injury can experience permanent visual loss or associated scotomata.

What causes commotio retinae?

42-78. Commotio retinae is caused due to pressure waves emanating from blunt trauma to the eye resulting in retinal injury. There may also be associated choroidal rupture or retinal haemorrhage. Following acute episode of oedema, retina may develop scarring and pigment dispersal.

How long does commotio retinae last?

There is no treatment for commotio retinae. However, most people fully recover in 3 to 4 weeks. In cases where trauma causes more severe damage, you may recover only part of your eyesight.

What is Berlin edema?

2 Berlin’s edema is an acute traumatic maculopathy characterized by retinal opacification. Histopathologic studies have shown that it is characterized by disruption of photoreceptor outer segments and retinal pigment epithelial damage.

Do retinal hemorrhages go away?

Retinal hemorrhages, especially mild ones not associated with chronic disease, will normally reabsorb without treatment. Laser surgery is a treatment option which uses a laser beam to seal off damaged blood vessels in the retina.

What is white without pressure?

White without pressure (WWP) describes a finding that your retina doctor may see when examining the peripheral retina. WWP is found in 15-30 percent of the population and is characterized by a discrete whitish-gray area in the far peripheral retina that is bordered by a dark line.

What causes Metamorphopsia?

[1] suggested that metamorphopsia is not only caused by displacement of retinal layers resulting in mislocation of light on the retina, but also by the combination of retinal changes with cortical processing, mainly after long-standing maculopathy or after treatment of macular disorders (as neovascular AMD).

What is cherry red spot?

A cherry-red spot refers to a red-tinted region at the center of macula surrounded by retinal opacification. Cherry-red spots may be present in a variety of pathologic conditions, including lysosomal storage disorders, retinal ischemia, and retinal infarction.

What are retinas?

The retina contains millions of light-sensitive cells (rods and cones) and other nerve cells that receive and organize visual information. Your retina sends this information to your brain through your optic nerve, enabling you to see.

Are eyes sympathetic?

The healthy eye is called the “sympathizing eye” because it shows sympathy to the injured one and becomes inflamed. Sympathetic ophthalmia is vision-threatening if not treated quickly.

What is traumatic mydriasis?

Traumatic mydriasis: Direct blunt trauma to the sphincter muscle of the iris can cause traumatic mydriasis. Symptoms include eye pain, blurry vision and photophobia. Contusion of the muscle results in a transient mydriasis, while tears to the muscle fibers can cause permanent injury.

How long does eye trauma heal?

Complications. Most eye injuries are not serious, and will heal within 24 to 72 hours without any lasting damage.

What is rosette cataract?

Rosette cataract is a type of traumatic cataract. Traumatic cataract is the clouding of the lens that occurs either by blunt trauma to the head or eye region or penetrating ocular trauma resulting in the disruption of the lens fibers. This in turn prevents a clear image from forming on the retina.

What is a Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment?

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is the most common type of retinal detachment. It can happen if you have a small tear or break in your retina. When your retina has a tear or break, the gel-like fluid in the center of your eye (called vitreous) can get behind your retina.

What is angle recession glaucoma?

Angle recession glaucoma (ARG) is a secondary open angle glaucoma that is associated with ocular trauma. Recession of the anterior chamber angle is a common slit lamp and gonioscopic finding following concussive ocular trauma.

Can CPR cause retinal hemorrhage?

Retinal hemorrhages are uncommon findings after CPR-CC. Retinal hemorrhages that are found after CPR-CC usually occur in the presence of other risk factors for hemorrhage with a mild hemorrhagic retinopathy in the posterior pole.

Can a retinal hemorrhage happen for no reason?

Types of retinal hemorrhage

Your eye doctor will see this on an exam. Causes can include high blood pressure, trauma or excessive blood vessel growth in the retina due to diseases like diabetes. Sometimes, there is no known cause.

What is a vitrectomy surgery?

A vitrectomy is a type of eye surgery to treat various problems with the retina and vitreous. During the surgery, your surgeon removes the vitreous and replaces it with another solution. The vitreous is a gel-like substance that fills the middle portion of your eye.
